Yahoo Food’s Cookbook of the Week: In Her Kitchen: Stories and Recipes from Grandmas Around the World (Clarkson Potter)
The Team: Italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti, whose work has appeared in Newsweek, Le Monde, and Vanity Fair. In 2013, Galimberti finished an 18-month trip around the world, during which time he spent countless hours in the kitchens of grandmothers in over 60 countries.
Noteworthy: On the eve of his trip around the world, Galimberti dined with his own grandmother, Marisa, who prepared his favorite ravioli. In Her Kitchen was born out of that dinner; when Marisa worried her grandson wouldn’t eat well during his travels, he replied: “The world is full of grandmothers who know how to cook well. Just like you, they’ve always cooked for their grandchildren with love. I promise you I’ll go eat in their homes and, to prove to you how well they’ve treated me, I’ll bring you pictures of the dishes they make for me, and copies of their recipes, too.”
The Cuisine: Truly the cooking of the world, from egg and beef arepas in Cartagena, Colombia, to poached salmon in Stockholm, Sweden, to sinigang, or tamarind soup, in the Philippines’ Manila.
Who Should Buy It: Subscribers to National Geographic, fans of portraiture, and/or those who want to eat their ways around the world—but who might need to live vicariously through Galimberti first before they get the time off.
Who Shouldn’t: Anyone turned off by the idea of hunting for eclectic and possibly eccentric ingredients such as Haitian djon djon mushrooms and kusksu pasta.
Must-Make Recipes: Pan-baked Berber bread from Morocco; twice-cooked pork from Chongqing, China; swiss chard and ricotta ravioli from Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy.
