Lena Dunham Really Loves Thanksgiving Stuffing
By Mickey Rapkin
She writes, produces, directs, and stars in the HBO series Girls. And for a while there, Lena Dunham also produced her family’s Thanksgiving dinner. “In the ten years I was vegan, I handled the tofurkey,” she says. “No one looked forward to it at all.”
She eats meat now, much to the relief of her relatives. And this month we all have something to be thankful for: Dunham’s new memoir, Not That Kind of Girl. “I talk a lot about my love/hate relationship with food,” she says, “and about the way my whole life changed when I gave in to eating when I was hungry, stopping when I was full, and embracing the beauty and power of being fed.”

She knows of what she writes. Her go-to snack on set? Yogurt (“I eat so much I should be arrested”). A meal worth traveling for? The Jackson Diner in Jackson Heights, Queens (“Delicious Indian food in overwhelming quantities”). Here, Dunham offers up her ideal Thanksgiving meal. Spoiler alert: There will be carbs.
