October's Best-Selling Cookbooks: Thug Kitchen Reigns Supreme

Maybe a little controversy wasn’t such a bad thing for Thug Kitchen duo Michelle Davis and Matt Holloway, whose hotly-debated September unmasking was greeted with a wave of criticism. Their first book, Thug Kitchen: The Official Cookbook, was October’s top-selling food title on Amazon.com, according to stats the e-commerce giant provided us.

This marks the second month in a row that the Thug Kitchen cookbook has cracked Amazon’s top 10, which is pretty darned impressive considering it didn’t even come out until October 7. Also worthy of kudos? Other top-selling titles that have been dominating the Amazon charts since September: Make It Ahead by Ina Garten, The Skinnytaste Cookbook by Gina Homolka, One Pot by the editors of Martha Stewart Living, Danielle Walker’s Against All Grain by Danielle Walker, 100 Days of Real Food by Lisa Leake, and Trim Healthy Mama by Pearl P. Barrett and Serene C. Allison.

Another notable addition to Amazon’s rankings is Plenty More by Yotam Ottolenghi. The Israeli-born, London-based chef’s third cookbook is his second to focus exclusively on vegetarian cuisine. (This October, Ottolenghi told us that “the world of vegetables [is] diverse and interesting and exciting,” and shared his recipes for cauliflower cake and honey-roasted carrots.)

Of October’s top-selling book titles, Plenty More is the only one to appear on lists from both Amazon and Omnivore Books, the independent bookstore in San Francisco, California that sells exclusively food and drink titles. (It doesn’t surprise us that the book appeals both to mainstream audiences and hardcore foodies: It’s gorgeous and the recipes are killer.) At Omnivore, Plenty More was especially popular, selling 294 copies, nearly 3.5 times sales of the runner-up, Heritage by Sean Brock. Ottolenghi’s two other books, Jerusalem and Plenty, also cracked Omnivore Books’ top-ten list.
