The Most Expensive Drink Ordered at Starbucks, Ever?

Rachel Tepper PaleyEditor
Updated

Think your last Starbucks order was expensive? Think again.

On Saturday, a customer the blog Consumerist identified only as “Andrew” allegedly ordered a massive, 60-espresso-shot 128-ounce milkshake, which would have cost an astounding $54.75. (That’s one way to get brain freeze.)

Luckily for Andrew, he’s a “Gold” member of Starbucks’ loyalty program, which snags him one free drink for every dozen he buys. Unfortunately for Starbucks, the chain didn’t stipulate how large or expensive the drink can be. And Andrew, inspired by a 2013 YouTube video featuring the previous record holder for most-expensive-Starbucks-order of $47.30, took advantage; this behemoth was his “gimme.”

According to the photograph of a receipt Andrew sent Consumerist, the extras in his milkshake included a mocha drizzle, hazelnut drizzle, caramel drizzle, protein powder… and those whopping 60 shots of espresso.

Andrew wanted to create something that was both drinkable and expensive. “The $47.30 guy put in two bananas, strawberry, matcha powder, pumpkin spice, and lots of other things that probably don’t go well together and definitely don’t go well with 40 shots of espresso,” Andrew told Consumerist in an e-mail. “They help raise the price, so I can’t fault him for the strategy, but I didn’t want to go that route.”

"I gotta say, it was delicious," Andrew wrote, adding that he finished off an impressive third of it. (He saved the rest for later.) No word on whether Andrew was able to sleep that night.

Correction: Andrew’s milkshake did not, as previously stated, contain two bananas, strawberry, matcha powder, and pumpkin spice.
