The Ultimate Stretchy Cheese Test

What’s the best part about mac and cheese or a toasty grilled cheese sandwich? To us, it’s having the gooey cheese stretch out as you take a bite. But which cheese is the stretchiest? There was only one way to find out: melt and stretch batches of different cheeses.
The Cheese-Stretch Championship
We tested eight varieties: Gouda, Swiss, Gruyère, jack, Cheddar, Fontal, Muenster, and mozzarella. We placed half-ounce cubes of each on a sheet tray in the oven at 500°F for three minutes, then scooped and dragged the cheeses across the sheet with a spoon.
Gouda and Muenster were the two stretchiest in the trials, so we put them head-to-head for the finals. Muenster won the Stretchy Cheese Grand Championship!
