Your Toast Would Like a New Topping, Please

There’s keeping things simple—the classic trench, the weeknight chicken sauté—and then there is a rut. The same piece of toast and [insert your favorite topping here], morning after morning. While we would never suggest you abandon your tried-and-true approach to what is one of the purest, most pleasurable breakfast options on earth (praise toast!), sometimes innovation is in order.
Toast is a place to let your imagination run wild. It can take on salty; it can take on sweet, even dinner leftovers can be a beautiful thing on a golden slice of bread. (It’s basically crostini, but in the morning, right?)
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Chocolate-Hazelnut Spread & Banana
Bring this classic late-night snack combo into the light of day. It is heaven with a cup of coffee.
Avocado, Lemon Juice & Salt
So simple, so ridiculously delicious. Scoop ripe avocado onto a piece of toast and gently mash-spread it with the back of your fork. Squeeze on lemon juice and scatter with sea salt.
Fig Jam & Prosciutto
You know this works on a dinner party cheese board, but it makes just as great of a savory-sweet breakfast. If you want to go full-on savory, sub the fig jam for Country Crock Simply Delicious and throw a few sliced cornichons on top.
Hummus & Sundried Tomatoes
It might seem strange, but hummus is the cornerstone of a traditional breakfast in some parts of the world. And it’s a perfect option for someone who prefers savory dishes in the AM.
Peanut Butter, Sliced Apple & Honey
This one’s a classic, and for good reason. Creamy peanut butter meets tart-sweet sliced apples, and when the whole thing is drizzled with honey, it’s just so right.
Sliced Hardboiled Egg, Mayo & Paprika
Like a deviled egg, deconstructed, and without all the work.
Cream Cheese & Smoked Salmon
All that bagel just gets in the way. If you have some capers, perhaps some feathery dill, or a slice of tomato, all the better.
Country Crock Simply Delicious, Sliced Radishes & Salt
Something happens when the assertive flavor of a radish meets mellow creaminess; it’s called magic.
Ricotta with Roasted Red Peppers
Spoon-spread some ricotta onto a piece of toast, then lay slices of roasted red peppers on top. (Drain the peppers first, if using jarred ones, and dab with a towel to remove excess moisture.) Season with salt and pepper.
Cream Cheese & Hot Pepper Jelly
Another dinner party hit that deserves the morning spotlight. Bright, sweet-hot pepper jelly is the perfect foil to a healthy layer of cream cheese.
