Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Recalls All Products, Closes Shops Due To Listeria Fears

Jeni’s Splended Ice Creams is recalling all of its products and closing all of its shops nationwide for the time being due to listeria fears, the company announced today (April 23).

The presence of listeria was detected by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, in a randomly collected sample of ice cream. There have been no reported illnesses linked with the recall, but out of an abundance of caution, the company is recalling all of its products, including ice cream, frozen yogurt, ice cream sandwiches, and sorbets, sold online, in stores, and in Jeni’s shops.

“We have decided to recall everything currently on retailer shelves, and we are closing our scoop shops until we are 100% confident every item we sell is safe,” John Lowe, CEO of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, said in a statement. ”We have called in experts to help us find the root cause. We will be working with our suppliers to determine if the bacteria was introduced by one of the ingredients we use. We will not reopen the kitchen until we can ensure the safety of our customers.”

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that causes listeriosis infection, a foodborne illness that causes symptoms of headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and stiffness. Most healthy people aren’t seriously affected by listeria infection, but it can be dangerous for pregnant women — because it can cause stillbirth or miscarriage — and it can be fatal for young children, elderly people, and those with compromised immune systems.

Listeria is most often found in raw sprouts, raw milk and dairy products, refrigerated meat spreads, deli meats, and soft cheeses, according to FoodSafety.gov. However, it’s recently been found in Blue Bell Creameries products; that company recalled all of its products on the market earlier this week.

Blue Bell’s recall affected 23 states as well as international locations, and included ice cream, sherbet, frozen yogurt, and other products, the Associated Press reported. Three deaths in Kansas, as well as five illnesses in Kansas and Texas, have been linked with this recall.

Sabra’s Classic Hummus was also the subject of a recent recall due to listeria fears.
