It was Shakespeare who once wondered, What’s in a name? But we’re looking at that question from a more tech-savvy angle today—as in, how your screen name affects your online dating success or lack thereof. And researchers from the United Kingdom’s Queen Mary University of London say it has a lot to do with whether you find love online.

By analyzing nearly 4,000 studies that investigated the art of attraction, researchers found that users with a screen name that begins with a letter in the first half of the alphabet are more likely to experience success with online dating. Why? People associate names that start with a letter in the alphabet’s top half as more successful in other arenas, such as income and educational attainment.

"Search engine listings are also sorted alphabetically," the researchers also noted. "Screen names starting with a letter near the top of the alphabet are presented first. Those in the lower quarter of the alphabet will be lost in the bottom of the pile if you start at the top."

You can also make your screen name stand out by choosing one that hints at your gender or attractiveness, the researchers found. Men are more likely to respond positively to screen names that include words such ascutie or blond—surprise! Names that could have negative connotations, such as little, are no good, they also say. Instead opt for something playful, such as “Fun2BWith,” because “playful screen names are universally attractive.”

What do you think? Will this affect the screen name you use if and when you online date? And now, I’m curious—what is your online dating profile screen name?
