FILM: Fiddler on the Roof (from October 1)

In a nutshell: Director Norman Jewison translates this classic Broadway musical into an equally enthralling and time–honoured family movie, following the life of Tevye (Topol), a poor milkman who must juggle the toils of everyday life with the harsh realities of being poor and Jewish in Tzarist Russia. Featuring songs such as If I Were a Rich Man, this film is poignant and kosher from start to finish.

In a nutshell: Tamara Jenkins makes a long awaited return to film with an unrelenting examination of a middle aged couple (Giamatti and Hahn) trying to keep their marriage afloat while undergoing fertility treatments and pursuing adoption.

In a nutshell: An endearing coming of-age comedy that revolves around the heroine Samantha's (Ringwald) 16th birthday, which quickly goes from bad to worse. It has some excellent, perceptive moments, with plenty of familiar concerns for teenage girls that are just as relevant today as they were in the Eighties.

In a nutshell: This elegantly ludicrous – and ludicrously enjoyable – film from Tom Ford is a delicious parade of misery. Susan (Adams) is a successful gallery owner. One day she receives the manuscript of a novel from her first husband (Gyllenhaal), whose heart she broke twice. The book is about revenge and this is revenge shot straight into her perfect little life.
