FILM: Children of Men  (from November 1)

In a nutshell: Filmmakers like nothing more than an impending apocalypse. Here director Alfonso Cuarón flashes forward to 2027 and a world in which the human race has mysteriously lost the ability to procreate. Disillusioned bureaucrat Clive Owen must help a pregnant refugee flee the repressive British authorities in this thoughtful, tautly plotted thriller.

In a nutshell: In a crime-ridden Detroit in the "near" future, police officer Alex Murphy (Weller) is murdered by a gang of criminals, but it revived by megacorporation OCP as a superhuman cyborg law enforcer known as RoboCop.  

FILM: The Lord of the Rings trilogy  (from November 1)

TV: House of Cards (sixth and final season) (from November 2)

In a nutshell: Detective Harry Ambrose returns to his New York hometown of Keller to investigate a double homicide, made all the more disturbing with the prime suspect being the 13-year-old son of the murdered couple.

In a nutshell: This post–apocalyptic sci–fi thriller stars Kevin Costner in a futuristic Earth covered in water and populated by warring gangs is often ridiculed as the most expensive flop of all time (it cost $175 million when it was made, for an initial return of just $88 million in the US). In truth, it's not quite as bad as its reputation would suggest – there are some cracking action scenes, and it's a visually strong watch.

In a nutshell: Chris Pine stars as the legendary Scottish King Robert the Bruce in the 13th-century drama following how the mighty warrior led his people in the First War of Scottish Independence.

In a nutshell: Bradley Cooper stars in this thriller about a writer whose former brother-in-law slips him a pill that enables him to access 100 per cent of his brain. His book is finished in four days, so he goes back for more and this time nets himself a fortune on the stock market. Neil Burger directs at breakneck pace, but afterwards you wish that Cooper's character had used that brainpower for something more interesting than making money.

In a nutshell: It is a miracle heads haven’t rolled over this Channel 4 satirical sitcom about the British royal family.  The glossy, campy Dynasty style soap opera that puts makes the House of Windsor on par with the Kardashians is a roaring, hysterical delight.

In a nutshell: Daniel Goldhaber’s feature debut sees Brewer play a cam girl. When her online life is hacked, and she's replaced by a doppelganger, she must fight back. It's an unlikely Hitchcock tale for the millennial age.
