The 10 Best Lipsticks for Women Over 50 That Are Hydrating, Blur Lip Lines and More
If there's one thing most of us can agree on, it's that a good lipstick can change your life. Well, maybe not your life, but it definitely can make or break your makeup game, and it's the one beauty product almost every woman keeps in their handbag. Some of us may just stick with the ol' reliable lipstick we've been using for 20 years, some of us may like to change it up and try different ones and some of us may be new to lipstick and trying to find the best one. No matter which category you fall under, we're here to help — and just in time for National Lipstick Day. Here, we rounded up the best lipsticks for women over 50 that deliver long-lasting, pigmented color while giving lips extra shine for a fuller-looking pout.
What to look for in a lipstick for women over 50
It may seem simple on the surface, but finding a good, high quality lipstick for mature women isn't always an easy task. You may think all it takes is heading to the drugstore, finding a color you like and buying it, but there's a few other factors we suggest considering to make sure you're finding the perfect lipstick for you.
1. A lipstick with a cream formula
As we age, we tend to develop fine lines and wrinkles due to a loss of collagen and elastin. However, this doesn't just happen to our skin — it can happen to our lips as well. You may notice your lips having more fine lines as you approach 50 and older, and if you wear lipstick, you may notice the wrong formulas can bleed into these fine lines and exacerbate them. Formulas that tend to highlight fine lines and wrinkles in lips are drying formulas, such as matte lipsticks. Not only do they highlight fine lines, they also can feel very uncomfortable on and lead to cracking because of its dryness.
Instead, opt for cream formulas with a satin or shine finish. These feel much more moisturizing on the lips and are often made with ingredients that hydrate (more on this to come below) while you wear them. Another thing to look for? A formulas that won't bleed or feather. Lip oils and hydrating glosses are also great if you like more of a sheen/lighter coverage.
2. A lipstick with added hydration
As mentioned above, you'll want to look for a lipstick that is hydrating, moisturizing and nourishing. Peeling/cracking lips after wearing a drying lipstick is unpleasant, to say the least, and can make lip products look patchy and textured. Some green flag ingredients to look for in a lipstick for mature women is hyaluronic acid, peptides, shea butter, oils like jojoba oil, avocado oil and olive oil, and vitamin E. These are all highly moisturizing and provide hydration to keep lips nourished and full.
3. A lipstick with a precise applicators
Another common and natural part of aging is losing fullness in our lips. If you've noticed your lips have gotten thinner, or if you naturally have thin lips to begin with, make sure you're choosing lipsticks that have precise, easy-to-use applicators. Anything too wide will make for messy, uneven application. That's why we love lipsticks that have a curved bullet design for ultra-fine precision.

Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Satin Shine Lipstick
The Pillow Talk lipstick from Charlotte Tilbury is essentially a global phenomenon at this point, highly loved and regarded by makeup artists, influencers and the everyday consumer alike. We specifically like this formula because it's ultra moisturizing with vitamin E, waxes and antioxidants. Plus, it has satin finish for shiny, full pout.
L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche Original Satin Lipstick
This pick is a classic, beloved for years. And it's no wonder why, with its wide shade range (34 shades to be exact) and satin, creamy finish. Plus, it costs less than $10 at the drugstore, and is made with nourishing omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin E and argan oil. Below is a TikTok from makeup artist and influencer Erica Taylor with her thoughts on this lipstick.
The MAC lipsticks are an OG, and another highly beloved options by both makeup artists and the everyday wearer. They're highly pigmented, giving you a rich, beautiful color, and feels like lip balm (aka not drying).
Buxom Full On Plumping Lip Matte
Now, while matte formulas aren't our first choice, some of us just simply don't like shine and want the matte finish. If that's you, this is one matte lipstick we can get behind for mature skin. We like it because it doesn't feel drying — rather, it feels smooth and soft. Even better, it has plumping technology from peptides and hyaluronic acid to give you a fuller looking pout. TikToker Kim Spader shares why she loves this lipstick in the video below.
Clinique Pop Longwear Lipstick
This lipstick is truly unmatched when it comes to shade and finish range. There are 36 different shades, and three finishes to choose from: satin, shine and matte. Again, we recommend sticking to shine and satin. And if you have sensitive skin, take comfort in knowing this lipstick is allergy-tested.
We love a good clean beauty find, and this lipstick takes the cake. It has no toxic ingredients, is cruelty-free, vegan, hypoallergenic and has a beautiful finish and color options. It's long-lasting and feels buttery-soft on lips as it's made with avocado oil and cocoa seed butter.
Merit Beauty Signature Lip Lipstick
This formula is oh-so-hydrating, and what sticks out to us with this pick is it's easily buildable — meaning you really have full control over how much coverage and color you want on lips. It's a great pick for throwing in your bag and transition from day (with a light, sheen coverage) to night (with a fuller coverage, bolder finish).
Laura Geller Modern Classic Cream Lipstick
Laura Geller is known for how well her products work for mature skin, and her lipstick formula is no different. It's creamy and lightweight, and is made with nourishing vitamin E. It effortlessly glides over fine lines, smoothing and blurring them instantly.
Lawless Forget the Filler Lip-Plumping Line-Smoothing Satin Cream Lipstick
Another plumping option, we like this pick especially for those with thinner lips. It plumps without the uncomfortable burning sensation many lip plumpers have, and it's made with moisturizing olive and jojoba oil.
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick
We couldn't leave out this drugstore staple! It's been around for decades, costs less than $10 and has a wide variety of shades. Plus, it's made with 80% conditioning ingredients, so lips will feel buttery smooth all day long.
