While there is still much more work to be done, more mainstream LGBTQ+ movies have broken their way into the white, cisgender male dominated cinema landscape — and the majority did so with raving reviews.

Whether it is a love story or a tale of friendship, it's important that everyone sees themselves represented on the silver screen. In the last couple of years alone, there have been several critically acclaimed films that clearly and accurately portray members of the LGBTQ+ community, from Oscar-winning Moonlight to Carol and Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Moonlight

The movie that caused all that Oscar Best Picture Drama in 2017. But there's a reason it was the real winner. The film follows three different chapters in the life of a young Black man who faces trials and tribulations as he discovers his sexuality.

When the queen's health starts to decline, a new servant is hired and the two soon become close.

A heartwarming tale that proves not all love stories are romances. This quiet, teenage girl finds a friend who understands her better than anyone else.

Love, Simon

The popular 2018 movie follows a young man discovering who he is and how to embrace his truth while also navigating the rough waters of being closeted in high school.

The Boys in the Band

This 2020 Netflix film is based on the 1968 play of the same name and follows a group of gay friends throwing a party, when a surprise guest from one of their pasts shows up. Come for the drama, stay for the star-studded cast, which includes Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, and more.

Call Me By Your Name

This touching, coming-of-age story finds two young men who become enamored by each other as they discover their sexualities during a summer in Italy countryside.
