104 girl names that start with 'R'

Name expert Laura Wattenberg describes R names as "one of the steadiest initials for girls."

"It's never been super popular or super unpopular," Wattenberg, creator of Namerology, tells TODAY.com. "It's different for boys, there was a time when names like Richard and Robert were dominant."

Wattenberg notes that for the first time since the 1800s, R is not a Biblical letter for girls.

"We've gone through Ruth, Rebecca, and Rachel," Laura Wattenberg, creator of Namerology, tells TODAY.com. "And now, the top R name is Riley, which is more popular than anyone would think, because there are dozens of ways to spell it."

With the exception of Riley, the "hot R names are all nature names," Wattenberg says, pointing to Rosemary, Rose and Ruby.

Surnames are also picking up momentum, according to Wattenberg.

"A rare action name to consider is Ripley," says Wattenberg, noting that Ellen Ripley is the protagonist in the "Alien" series.

The other hot style is what Wattenberg calls "miniature names," including, Rhea, Roma, and Rena.

If you're looking to the stars (as in celebrities) for inspiration, there are plenty of famous faces with great "R" monikers.
