As Charleston, South Carolina experienced its earliest 100-degree day on record during a heat wave this week, one 11-year-old girl made it her mission to hand deliver cold water to the city's homeless.

Chloe, a student at Summerville Elementary Schoo in Summerville, S.C., packed a cooler with cold water bottles and handed them out on Tuesday.

Rachel Lee, Chloe's mother's best friend, shared photos of 11-year-old’s kind act on Instagram.

"With this heat wave she wanted to take a cooler downtown with cold waters and pass them out to the homeless and those in need," Rachel wrote about Chloe. "She also handed out folded little positive notes and drawings with a few bucks inside them too. All her own idea."

Lee commended Chloe for her selfless act.

"I am so proud of this kid and I love her so much," she wrote. "Kids like her give me hope for the future!"

The National Weather Service issued a warning for citizens to be careful spending time outdoors as temperatures climbed as high as 106 degrees Fahrenheit this week.

"Typically we tell people to limit their time outdoors (and) drink plenty of fluids," Peter Mohlin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston, told The Post and Courier. "Stay out of the direct sunshine as much as possible."

Extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the country, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Homeless people are especially at risk during summer months, as excessive heat can lead to dehydration and exposure-related illnesses such as heat stroke, according to the National Health Care for the Homeless Council. Even sweating, our body's natural way to cool down, can be dangerous for homeless people who may only have one pair of clothes, as sweat-soaked clothing can lead to rashes and infections.
