12-year-old boy ushers uncle to safety during devastating Alabama tornadoes
A 12-year-old boy is being hailed as a hero in Eufaula, Ala., after he rescued his legally blind uncle from a tornado as destructive storms passed through the state.
Jave’ Williams might not have had a chance to think about the possible consequences of the storms hitting his grandmother’s neighborhood during the weekend, which left trees knocked over and roofs torn off houses. But he didn’t need to second-guess his responsibility when it came to getting his family members to their “safe place,” according to Columbus, Ga., news station WTVM.
“I saw it was a bunch of ruckus going on. Everything was getting destroyed,” Williams told the local Georgia station. “I saw his whole window swing through and the door fly away. When we got in the bathroom, I turned on my flashlight, and then we just sat for a second.”
According to WTVM, the boy and his uncle remained safely sheltered until the storm settled down. And although no injuries have been reported in the city of Eufaula, the mass destruction still has people shaken up.
Neighboring Lee County continues to face devastation from the extreme weather as the death toll from the tornado rose to 23, the Lee County sheriff told the Associated Press.
