14 Matching Knit Sets to Wear and Rewear

Matching knit sets may appear to be yet another pandemic-era leisure trend. But coordinating knitwear—often a sweater with a matching skirt or wide-leg pant—has history. They could be found at the likes of Live the Process, Leset, and Cult Gaia for months, if not years, before the ongoing loungewear boom. The inspiration? “I felt the idea of having something that went together would feel both easy and special; like having a full look,” Robyn Berkley, founder of Live the Process, tells BAZAAR.com.

Still, fashion insiders say cozy co-ords are gaining new fans for quarantine-adjacent reasons. “Since the start of the pandemic, luxury classic knitwear from brands such as The Row, Khaite, Jil Sander or Gabriela Hearst has seen great uplifts,” MyTheresa Fashion Buying Director Tiffany Hsu tells BAZAAR. “Clients want to invest in more quality and longevity items that they can wear at home but also out.”

Jared Morrison, Nordstrom Designer Ready-to-Wear and Kids Buyer, adds that these sets are more than a timely step up from sweatpants. They’re “great investment pieces because they can also be worn as separates and become building blocks for your wardrobe,” he says.

With so much potential found in two easy garments, buying matching knit sets can become a habit. Just ask Cult Gaia founder Jasmin Larian Hekmat. “After buying one set, [our customer] ends up buying all three colors because the quality is great for the price point and it’s just a closet staple,” she says. “This is resonating with women so much because who doesn’t want to feel equally chic and cozy?” No one, we’d wager.
