Thanksgiving was always a bit unconventional for my family. My parents are from Mexico, and they separated when I was young, so we never celebrated in the traditional American way — instead, we’d go out to a restaurant, order Thai or Chinese food, or go to a family friend’s house for Mexican holiday classics like tamales. Since meeting my husband over a decade ago, I’ve come to appreciate the traditional Thanksgiving dinner that not only includes a picturesque turkey and stuffing, but also a well-dressed table.

Because my mother-in-law has hosted Thanksgiving for the last few years, my mom decided she’d try it out this year. She rarely hosts large get-togethers (she’s more into intimate dinner parties), so I figured I could get her something to help on the decor front. My mom has always had great style and taste, which meant I was on the hunt for something functional but ultimately showstopping — and luckily, I stumbled upon the most whimsical Thanksgiving decor at none other than Target. The John Derian Collection is an assortment of autumn-inspired pieces, serving bowls, and trays that give a classic yet magical vibe. One piece in particular, however, stood out as the most efficient and charming for my mom’s table setting: the $15 3-Piece Fall Vegetable Stoneware Cheese Knife Set.

For as long as I can remember, my mom has loved wine and cheese. In fact, her go-to “girl dinner” is a personal-sized charcuterie board with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon — so when I saw this cheese knife set, I knew it would be the perfect addition to her Thanksgiving table. Not only would the bold colors and autumn vegetable shapes stand out on the table, but she’d also be able to use this set long after the holidays have ended.

I also decided to pair this knife set with a set of cocktail napkins that’ll be helpful when sipping on the sangria my mom will inevitably make. I actually loved both the knife and napkin sets so much I got them for myself, too!

Whether you’re a table of two or 20, this cheese knife set on a board of quality cheeses will serve as a unique, memorable piece of functional decor as well as a delicious amuse-bouche before your decadent Thanksgiving dinner. While both the knife set and the cocktail napkins are sold-out at Target, you can find them for just a few dollars more on eBay (find the knife set here and here, and the cocktail napkins here and here).
