16th annual KC Chalk and Walk Festival kicks off in City Market
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Dozens of artists from across the country are showing off their talents in a unique way this weekend at the KC Chalk & Walk Festival.
“Helps me focus and is just something I’ve always loved doing,” Park Hill South Junior Elizabeth Landuyt said.

Artists like Landuyt are trading in their usual canvas for the sidewalks of the City Market, creating unique artwork during this year’s 16th Annual Chalk & Walk Festival.
“They talk about it all year. We usually get pictures put in the yearbook and students ask to do it again next year,” Park Hill South Art Teacher Heather Sulzen said.
“It’s something they can put on their resume, it’s something that helps build community. It’s just a memory that they have from high school that they hold onto.”
The festival is free thanks to community sponsors and helps support arts education programs for local shelters and schools.
“The idea of children actually seeing adult artists and those children want to become artists… it kind of gives them an oomph,” KC Chalk & Walk Executive Director Lotti Halpern said.
“You know they can say I can be an artist. I have artists of all ethnicities, and I think that’s important.”

With hundreds of families expected to view this weekend’s artwork, first-time festival artist Elizabeth Landuyt hopes her talents inspire others.
“I just hope that they’re inspired because art is such a fun way to express yourself,” Landuyt said.
“It always just brings me closer to the world around me and I think it’s just such a fun thing to do and I hope it inspires other people to go out and do art as well.”
The Chalk & Walk Festival continues Sunday from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Designs will be on the sidewalks until the rain washes them away.
