Just like gelato flavors, there's no shortage of Italian names to choose from.

"The Italian names that appeal most to Americans are sort of flowing and romantic like Giovanni, Leonardo, Lorenzo," Laura Wattenberg, creator of Namerology, tells TODAY.com. "For girls, it's Valentina and Liliana. There's a lyrical quality that parents today are drawn to."

Wattenberg notes that past generations were fond of old-fashioned names such as Guido and Vito.

According to the most recent data from the Social Security Administration, three Italian names are in the top 10 girl names: Mia Isabella, and Luna. It's certainly not the first time. Mia has been in the top 10 names for girls since 2009, and Isabella has claimed a top 10 spot since 2004.

When it comes to boy names, Mateo sits at No. 6. Mateo first broke the top 100 for boys in 2015 and has grown steadily since.

Leo — a shortened version of the Italian name Leonardo — is another popular choice with U.S. parents, ranking at No. 18.
