2023 Emmys Snubs and Surprises: Selena Gomez, Christina Applegate and More
It's officially Emmys season!
The nominations for the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards have finally been announced, and as usual, there's no shortage of snubs and shockers.
After the Television Academy released the list of nominations for this year's awards on Tuesday, July 12, fans were quick to react to the news online—and there's definitely some strong feelings going on.
Scroll through the list of this year's Emmys Award nominees to see all of the biggest surprises, snubs and well-deserved nods!
Elizabeth Olsen, Love & Death
In perhaps the biggest upset from Tuesday's announcement, Elizabeth Olsen was notably left off the nominees list.
The 34-year-old actress, who stars in the HBO miniseries Love & Death, wasn't included in the nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Instead, the category consisted of nods for Lizzy Caplan (Fleishman Is In Trouble), Jessica Chastain (George & Tammy), Dominique Fishback, (Swarm), Kathryn Hahn (Tiny Beautiful Things), Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & the Six) and Ali Wong (Beef).
It would be an understatement to say that Olsen's fans are outraged, with many of them taking to social media to express their anger over the snub.
"Elizabeth Olsen was ROBBED cos are you not seeing this Emmys??!" one person tweeted alongside a clip from Love & Death, which focuses around the true story of Candy Montgomery, who infamously killed her friend with an axe.
"her performance in Love&Death captured many eyes and should be recognized!" someone else echoed.
"we love you elizabeth olsen you outdid yourself," another fan wrote, offering support to the actress.
Sharon Horgan, Bad Sisters
In one of the happy surprises from the announcement, Sharon Horgan, 52, received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role in the Apple TV+ series, Bad Sisters.
The Irish actress was listed alongside fellow nominees, Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets), Elizabeth Moss (The Handmaid's Tale), Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), Keri Russell (The Diplomat) and Sarah Snook (Succession).
Selena Gomez, Only Murders in the Building
In yet another major Emmys snub, Selena Gomez was once again excluded from the nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, marking her second time being left off the list for her performance in Hulu's Only Murders in the Building.
Her co-star, Martin Short, however, earned a nod in the same category for Lead Actor for a second year in a row, while Steve Martin was also among the nominees for the 2022 Emmy Awards.
Christina Applegate, Dead to Me
To the delight of her fans, Christina Applegate was recognized for her performance in Netflix's Dead to Me, earning her a spot among the nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
The nod for Applegate, 51, comes as a much-deserved pat on the back for the actress, who filmed the show's third and final series amid her ongoing battle with MS.
"I'll be forever happy Christina Applegate got an emmy nomination for Dead To Me," one user celebrated on Twitter.
Steve Martin, Only Murders in the Building
Steve Martin appears to be in the same boat as his Only Murders in the Building co-star Selena Gomez this year, as he also wasn't nominated for his work on the Hulu murder-mystery slash comedy series.
Despite being among the nominee's last year, Martin, 77, was left off the 2023 list, while his onscreen—and offscreen— comedy counterpart, Martin Short, was named as a nominee for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for the second year in a row.
Harrison Ford, Shrinking and 1923
What a snub! Harrison Ford was left off the nominations list for not just one, but for two noted performances!
The 80-year-old actor was favorited to take home the win for his supporting role in Apple TV+ Shrinking, so it's quite a shock to learn that he wasn't even nominated.
He also excluded in the Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series category, after fans predicted he would earn a nod for his role in Paramount+'s Yellowstone prequel 1923—though he was unfortunately snubbed again.
A nomination in either category would have been the legendary actor's first-ever Emmys nomination. Another upset!
Jenna Ortega, Wednesday
In a pleasant surprise for fans of Netflix’s Wednesday, Jenna Ortega received her first-ever Emmy nomination in the category for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
The 20-year-old actress quickly mesmerized audiences while playing the titular character Wednesday Addams on the supernatural Netflix series. The Tim Burton-directed series—noted for its offbeat style and impressive dark wit and —also received a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Ortega’s nomination not only makes history as her first nod ever, but she also is only the third Latina to ever be nominated in a lead actress category. The only other two actresses to do so before her are Rita Moreno (9 to 5) in 1983 and America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) in 2007.
Sophie Nélisse, Yellowjackets
Some fans online were also peeved by the lack of nominations for Sophie Nélisse, the actress who plays the younger version of Melanie Lynskey's character in Yellowjackets.
"sophie nelisse you gave one of the best and most difficult performances of the year and you deserved to be recognized for that," one upset fan wrote on Twitter.
"sophie nelisse SO deserved a nomination after this performance wtf," someone else lamented.
James Marsden, Jury Duty
James Marsden's Emmy nomination also among the pleasant surprises for the day, as he was recognized in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category for his role in the series Jury Duty.
"i stand by jury duty being the role of a lifetime for james marsden i'm so happy he got nominated for it," one fan gushed on Twitter.

Emma D'Arcy, House of the Dragon
House of the Dragon's Emma D'Arcy was also missing from the list of Emmy nominees, igniting shock and anger from the 31-year-old's loyal fans.
"Emma D'Arcy not being nominated for an Emmy is a crime," one Twitter user argued.
But they aren't the only cast member to get snubbed this year, as not one actor from the Game of Thrones prequel earned a nomination, despite the series itself landing a spot in the Outstanding Drama Series category.
Riley Keough, Daisy Jones & The Six
Riley Keough—who put on a show-stopping performance as the titular character in Amazon Prime video's Daisy Jones in the Six—received her first-ever Emmy nomination on Tuesday, much to the delight of her loyal fanbase.
After being named as a contender for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Keough's fans took to Twitter to express their excitement.
"riley keough getting her first emmy nomination for her role as daisy jones is something so personal to me," one user wrote.
