Since the Neolithic age, men and women cross culturally have been tattooing their bodies under the guise of religious veneration or cosmetic expression, a process giving corporeal manifestation to presumed hereditary and tribal allegiances. Though historically viewed as the taboo insignia of fringe societal subsets, this list is indicative of a larger cultural shift in the perception of tattooing. In 2012, just 21% of adult Americans had a tattoo, a share that has since ballooned to nearly a third by 2023.
