Certain flavors take you back to your childhood, and for me, one of them is a root beer float.

Whenever I visited my grandma, she’d let me make a root beer float. I remember standing on a chair to get the ice cream out of the freezer because I was too little to reach it. After I got the ice cream out and spooned it into a big soda glass, she would open the root beer for me so I could pour it over the ice cream. I’d sit at her kitchen table and dig in.

It was a sweet treat I savored. My mom never purchased soft drinks unless there was a party, so root beer floats were out as snacks.

There’s a new treat at ALDI that reminds me of those sweet afternoons at my grandma’s house: Barq’s Frozen Root Beer & Vanilla Ice Cream Floats.

What I Love About Barq’s Frozen Root Beer & Vanilla Ice Cream Floats

This new frozen treat costs $3.99 for a pack of eight three-ounce servings of root beer and vanilla goodness. When I opened the cone-shaped tube, the aroma of sassafras sweetness mingled with vanilla hit my nose, taking me right back to my grandma’s house. And it tastes as good as it smells: exactly like a root beer float when the root beer foams, freezes, and mingles with the ice cream into a sweet slurry of a treat.

I’m not the only one fond of the new frozen floats. My son, Quinn, and his pack of gymnastics buddies all love it, too. When they’re hanging out after practice, playing volleyball in the backyard, or biking down to the creek, they come back sweaty, thirsty, and hungry, and a tube or two of this frozen goodness satisfies like nothing else.

“It tastes better than a regular root beer float,” my son told me.  His friend Jack told me, “It’s gooood,” drawing out the word for a few seconds.

This treat isn't just delicious, but because it’s served in squeezable individual packaging, it’s also highly portable and way less messy than a lot of other ice cream treats. Pack a few in a cooler, and you can take them to the lake, beach, park, or wherever you’re seeking summer fun.

And maybe, if you’re like me, it will bring back some summer memories, too.
