3 Loungewear Trends We're Loving for Fall (And One We’re Retiring For Now)
We’ll always love our sweatsuits and matching leggings/sports bras, but this fall there’s a whole new wave of loungewear trends to fall in love with that are just as easy to wear. As an added bonus, our top three favorites also happen to look polished and chic so you can wear them during a Zoom work meeting or out for coffee with friends without sacrificing an ounce of comfort. Here are three new loungewear trends we can’t wait to try out, plus one we plan to stow away for the season.

1. Tennis Apparel
Pleated mini skirts and skorts have been trending all summer, but with the U.S. Open on the horizon and fall just around the corner we’ve seen this sporty trend really picking up steam. The easiest (and most comfortable) way to sport the look is with a classic crewneck sweatshirt and a true sport skirt with built in shorts. Just think of these Serena and Naomi inspired bottoms as the next evolution of your beloved bike shorts. If you plan to wear the trend out and about, stick to the theme and rock sporty kicks, preferably in a coordinating color, with your ankle socks poking out the top.

2. Elevated Knit Sets
Last winter we alternated between our favorite fleece sweatsuits and cozy cashmere getups, but this time around it’s all about thinner, textured knits and delicate detailing. Think ribbed cardigans and flared pants or a waffle-knit tee and matching pencil skirt. You can, of course, wear the pieces independently with other fall favorites (like jeans or a plaid shirt), but the best way to rock the trend is definitely with a full coordinated ensemble.
Get the look: Aerie sweater ($35) and pants ($40); Pretty Lavish top ($56) and pants ($60); Daily Practice sweater and pants ($120); Maeve sweater and pants ($190); Cult Gaia sweater ($260) and pants ($298)
3. Oversize Button-Downs
One of the most versatile wardrobe staples, the oversize button-down is also one of the most comfortable and we plan to take full advantage of both qualities this autumn. Wear it with matching boxer shorts or bike shorts through the end of the summer, then over leggings or simply as a minidress once temperatures start to drop. Don’t bother ironing or trying to tuck or tie it to show off your figure—the point is to embrace the ease and coziness of an oversize silhouette.
Get the look: Missguided shirt ($48); Open Edit shirt ($49); NYDJ shirt ($89; $54); Topshop shirt ($56); J.Crew shirt ($80)
4. Retire: Fancy PJs
Look, we’re not entirely opposed to a luxe silk nightgown or some feather-trimmed pajama pants, but this fall we’re limiting them to at-home hangs. There was a time when showing off your fanciest ‘jammies on Zoom or out for brunch was cool, but now it just feels like you forgot to change before showing up to an event. Save them for the purpose for which they were designed: bedtime. And also binging The White Lotus.
