35 Bible Verses About Jealousy and How To Overcome It
Blocks that spell out "Envy"
There is one thing that will destroy your joy quickly and that is jealousy—when we want what we can't have and tend to obsess over it. Instead of being happy for the good things that happen to family, neighbors and friends, we might want those things for ourselves and could view anyone else's good fortune as being unfair.
This jealousy robs us of our happiness. It's funny how we can be perfectly content and then BAM, a friend acquires a dream job or finds their soul mate and we get a sudden pang of resentment. Our focus changes and eats away at our contentment—leaving us with many negative feelings.
Envy is so common in our everyday lives that it's no wonder that there is so much written about it in scripture. Luckily, there are many ways to overcome this particular "green monster." Here are 35 Bible verses about jealousy that help us to change our focus and enjoy an abundant life.

What Does the Bible Say About Jealousy?
The Bible explains that jealousy is a sin and needs to be dealt with. This verse in James portrays the harsh reality of it: “However, if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, then stop bragging and living in ways that deny the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above. Instead, it is from the earth, natural and demonic” (James 3:14-15).
True joy comes from what God has done for us by His grace and mercy. This joy is not dependent on our circumstances but is based on receiving His gift of eternal life through Jesus. Satan wants to rob us of that joy by trying to switch our focus on ourselves and our wants. We need to recognize where jealousy stems from and turn away from it.

How Does God Say To Overcome Jealousy?
1. Count Your Blessings
When the ugly green monster rears its head, one of the best ways to overcome those envious feelings is to count your blessings. Once you start thinking about or writing down all of the good things in your life, you begin to gain a better perspective of all of your blessings. Then, thank God for what you do have, and you'll be able to overcome jealousy with gratitude instead.
The Bible shares the importance of praising God for everything. The psalmist wrote in Psalms 103:2, "Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things he does for me."
2. Don't Believe the Lie
The world will tell you that you would be happier if only you had that new car, house, boat or whatever you think you want. However, material things will never be enough for true happiness. Sure, we may enjoy that new thing initially, but that thrill wears off quickly and then we are looking for the next new thing.
The same is true with situations. It's common for us to think that the grass is always greener on the other side. However, if everyone thinks that, then where is the green grass actually?
3. Pray and Repent
To get our hearts in the right place, we have to consciously turn away from those envious feelings when they creep up. The best thing is to pray right away. Admit to God what you are feeling, claim his promises and ask Him to give you the right focus.
Just the act of prayer can help change our focus to looking above rather than at the worldly things around us. God can help you replace those uneasy feelings of desire with peace and contentment in Him instead.
