The 4 Tacos We Ate In Mexico And Can't Stop Thinking About
Here's the deal: These tacos may not appeal to you by look or name, but they are freaking delicious. I was born and raised in Mexico, and eating and trying all sorts of animal parts is one of the best parts of being from Mexico. Not only does very little go to waste with our meat, but each and every one of these tacos also has a different texture and flavor—even though they come from the same animal! Please join me on this journey to the world of Tacos de Cabeza: head tacos.
Tacos de Lengua (Tongue Tacos)
Tongue meat is soft, slightly sweet, and delicious! Plus, it's rich content of fat and protein are said to have higher nutritional value than that of any steak. So there you go, it’s not only tasty, but healthy as well (in moderation). I was around four years old when I tried tongue for the first time and it was love at first bite.
Tacos de Sesos (Brain Tacos)
OK, these are harder to sell. I know they don't look particularly appetizing and the idea of eating brains might be too much to handle for some. But, if you are brave enough to get over that and you close your eyes and bite, you might just find yourself in taco heaven. This meat is smooth and silky with a very soft and buttery finish, which is a great contrast to the red salsa, onion, and cilantro I recommend you add to your taco.
Tacos de Ojo (Eye Tacos)
If I think about it too much, I wouldn't do it either, which is why I just go for it (and, believe me, I go for this taco every time). This is truly my favorite. Cow eyes are juicy and gelatinous...in a good way. Taco de Ojo has such a unique flavor that it is almost impossible to describe, it tastes like, well, ojo. I would say it's an experience you have to have to know what I'm talking about.
Tacos de Cachete (Cheek Tacos)
I have to be honest—it took me a while to gain the courage needed to try cachete. From all of the above, I'm not sure why this was the one I never felt compelled to try, but when I did...OMG! This taco became a must-have! The meat is lean with a wonderful texture that isn't chewy or fatty. It's just perfect.
