On Thursday, Russian troops launched a full-scale invasion on Ukraine, according to AP News. This is the first major war in Europe in decades.

Russia began artillery strikes on airports and military installations all over Ukraine before sunrise on Thursday, The New York Times reported. By the afternoon, Russian troops and tanks had entered the country on three fronts, according to The Financial Times. Ukraine also lost control of the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the scene of the world’s worst nuclear disaster, per AP reporting.

In a televised address after the initial attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that the country is now under martial law. Martial law is the temporary substitution of military authority for civilian rule, according to the U.S Department of Justice.

These attacks have sent people fleeing for safety. "137 Ukrainians have been killed and 316 wounded after the first day of fighting," Zelensky announced in a press conference, per The Washington Post. Zelensky emphasized that Russian forces were attacking civilian areas as well as military sites.
