5 Period Panties (Other Than Thinx) You Didn’t Know You Needed
We all wear underwear (most of the time, at least), so why not have underwear you can bleed into without fear? This question was on the minds of many women after Thinx began to gain international attention in 2014 with the launch of period-proof panties; soon after, the Thinx classic hiphugger was named one of the best new inventions by Time magazine in 2015. While menstrual cups are enticing, they pose the same issue as tampons in that you still have to remove and replace them. With so many products on the market promising a leak-free period, period panties provide an option that has protection built right in.
There are so many different types of period-proof underwear now, all with slightly different fits and functions. Some have a space to insert your own liners; others are made of 100 percent cotton to ensure breathability. If you haven’t tried a pair yet, or you’re a Thinx lover who wants see what else is out there, check out these five brands to fit all of your period needs.
1. Panty Prop Sleep Suit ($60): Panty Prop launched in 2015 with period panties that have a section for you to insert a pad or liner for more security, all while holding up to 2.5 tampons’ worth of Aunt Flo. The most innovative piece in their collection is definitely the sleep suit. Made of 92 percent cotton, the sleep suit has their period panty technology built into a soft and cozy onesie to keep you warm during the time of the month when you need a little extra TLC. Panty Prop also makes a line of briefs for men, because we could all use a little extra security, right?
2. Undie Pads ($9 for 3): Brands like Thinx and Panty Prop require you to wash and air-dry your undies after each wear; if you don’t want to do laundry so often, Undie Pads are disposable and can be worn for up to 12 hours. Each box comes with three pairs made of lightweight biodegradable fabric to get you through the thick of it. They also have a built-in pad that won’t shift and scrunch by the end of the day.
3. Modi Bodi Vegan Bikini ($25): Modi Bodi started in 2013 after asking the question, “Why hasn’t underwear evolved?”, and answering with a line of swimwear, athletic wear, and their newest edition, vegan period-proof underwear. What’s not vegan about other period-proof undies, you might ask? It mostly has to do with the way that materials for the fabrics are processed. Nevertheless, these have the vegan mark of approval as well as protection for the heaviest of days.
4. Dear Kate Hazel xx Hipster Mini ($36): These stretchy nylon undies come in a variety of colors and fits for all body sizes. What makes Dear Kate different is that they don’t use any plastic lining, which can make underwear less breathable and can cause strong odors. Due to this difference, these panties hold the equivalent of one tampon, making them perfect for the gym or a night out.
5. Knix Athletic Leakproof Thong ($22): In 2013, Knix launched a line of underwear to prevent “little leaks” and decided not to stop there. Their period-proof underwear comes in three styles: bikini, boyshorts, and thongs, all made for chafe-free comfort. The seamless panties hold two tampons’ worth of leaks and have a mini built-in liner for extra protection. Knix also offers ultra-absorbent bras for leaks of all kinds.
6. Thinx All-Star Set ($100): Thinx has been innovating since their first pair of hiphuggers. Now, you can get three pairs for every mood in one period-proof bundle. Each pair is designed to hold up to 1-2 tampons’ worth of leaks.
The future of period panties is brighter than ever, and with new styles and fits coming out all the time, your underwear drawer will soon be full of leak-less alternatives.
