5 Questions Call the Midwife Needs to Answer in Season 10
The 9th season of Call the Midwife may have just ended its run in the U.S. but that doesn't mean that we've had our fill of the ladies of Poplar. In a season complete with drama, romance, and the challenges posed by the fast-paced cultural shift of the '60s, there was plenty to ponder, and a number of questions we're still craving answers to. Here are some of the things we hope to see resolved in season 10. (Be warned—from here on in are spoilers for season 9.)
Will Nonnatus House survive?
Without question, the biggest plot point of season 9 was the question of whether Nonnatus House would be closed down. In the season finale, Nonnatus House was given a 12-month reprieve from a rent hike and had its funding restored, but whether it is still earmarked for demolition as part of slum clearing efforts isn't clear.
Will the Turners get to keep Mae?
In season 9, Shelagh and Dr. Turner were at risk of losing custody of their foster daughter, Mae, when Mae's mother, who had previously been believed to be dead, turned up in England as the nanny to a British military family. While the Turners had been on the cusp of legally adopting Mae, her mother's appearance threw that into turmoil and while she ultimately, reluctantly, agreed to allow the Turners to continue raising Mae as her guardians in the UK, she refused to give up parental rights, meaning that we may yet see her return to reclaim her daughter.
Will Dr. McNulty be back?
Call the Midwife's newest face, Dr. Kevin McNulty came onto the scene as a trainee physician and stayed on working with Dr. Turner throughout the season. Though he was popular with the residents of Poplar, the doctor had a secret, which finally came out at in the finale: an addiction to prescription pain medication. At the end of the season, he was sent away for treatment, potentially leaving the door open for him to return in future seasons.
Will Lucille and Cyril get married?
Call the Midwife is no stranger to romance, but the love story between nurse Lucille Anderson and her boyfriend Cyril Robinson has been an especially slow burn for the show since they first started dating in season eight. They've suffered through some relationship bumps as they've tried to balance time together with their careers, but the end of the season saw them working together to support Valerie's grandmother on her deathbed, sharing in their mutual faith. Fans of the series have been hoping to see the couple make things official for a while now, and though the cast seems to be on board with the idea, nobody's gotten down on one knee yet. We're waiting, Cyril!
How long can the midwives serve Poplar?
The women of Nonnatus House may have gotten a 12 month breather from the risk of closure, but it's hard not to feel like the clock is ticking for them. As the Councils' chief medical officer pointed out the Sister Julienne in the season finale, "With the expansion of the St Cuthbert's Maternity wards, the work of your order is clearly going to decline in importance." And while we know midwifery certainly didn't disappear, there's no denying that hospital births, along with birth control, increasingly became the norm through the '60s and '70s, creating questions about whether the residents of Nonnatus can keep up their work long term, or if their transition of clinic work and home care will be enough to sustain them beyond the already-confirmed seasons 10 and 11.
With production shut down during the novel coronavirus epidemic, it sounds like we may be waiting quite a while to find out the answers.
