As a Brooklyn-based fashion editor, trends, forecasts and—let’s be honest—people-watching is a huge part of what I do. And not being able to see what outfits the humans of New York were putting together for the past year or so was tough. But as the outside world begins to open up, I’ve made it a point to check out what people are wearing and you guys…it is good. Now I’m reporting back, on the top trends to hit the streets of Brooklyn this summer.

1. The Chunky Sandal

As we slowly dip our toes into the pool that is human interaction, a major priority is comfort. As tough as lockdown may have been, it has definitely changed our minds about making fashion work for and not against us—focusing on flattering, yet relaxed looks. Women in Brooklyn are fully leaning into the trend with super chic flatforms and flip flops with heavier soles, for a look with early aughts vibes but contemporary appeal. Chunky shoes are the ultimate win-win, giving you a height boost without putting strain on your soles.

2. Long Bermuda Shorts

From the streets of Bed Stuy to Park Slope, stylish women are pairing these puppies with bralettes, going out shirts, button downs, graphic t-shirts—you name it. We love this option because they’re a bit more sophisticated than their cousin (the cut off), but still manage to be sexy. Plus, they have an added layer of comfort when it comes to sweltering hot days and sticky, sweaty legs.

3. The Bralette

We can’t blame Brooklyn beauties for opting to show some skin after being isolated for the past year. And as outdoor functions become more commonplace, we’re seeing women of all shapes and sizes step out in cropped, midriff-bearing tops, whether sporty or on-the-town ready. Pair them with the aforementioned long shorts, flowing, wide legged trousers or breezy silk skirts.

4. The Vibrant Button Down

From classic oversized options to fun, printed looks, it’s all about throwing on a button up over a bralette or tying it up for a cool, “oh this old thing?" vibe while you laze around in Prospect Park. We especially love the ones that teeter on the edge of dad’s Hawaiian shirt, but don’t go fully overboard, lest you veer into Weird Al territory.

5. The Silky Skirt

The silk or satin skirt is another unassuming trend with big results. A major hit at rooftop parties, art museum visits and even picnics at Fort Greene park., the silk skirt instantly elevates your outfit without feeling too stuffy. Pair this look with a simple, chic button down, a graphic tee, sneakers, chucky sandals, heels, I mean, should we go on?
