5 Things You Should Know About New Surgeon General Sylvia Trent-Adams
With President Trump asking Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, an Obama administration appointee, to step down, the way has been cleared for U.S. Public Health Service Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams to serve in the role. Trent-Adams brings a wealth of experience in her more than two decades with the Public Health Service Corps; despite that, there may be a few things you didn’t know about the new acting surgeon general.
She has a strong background in nursing
Trent-Adams has over 24 years of experience with the USPHS. Since joining the USPHS’s Commissioned Corps in 1992, Trent-Adams has made tremendous moves. Before then, she worked as a U.S. Army nurse officer, and prior to that, she worked as a research nurse for the University of Maryland Medical Center.
She holds a doctorate
Trent-Adams, who got her undergraduate degree at Hampton University, earned both her master’s and PhD from the University of Maryland. In 2014, she became a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
Trent-Adams juggles family life and career with expert ease
Trent-Adams, with her husband, Dennis Adams, has two daughters, Nadia and Alexia. In an interview with the Times Virginian, she revealed that her mother gave her some of the early tools for success that have served her well over the course of her career. Juggling motherhood and work couldn’t have been easy, but it appears that our new surgeon general is well prepared.
Public life is a piece of cake for Trent-Adams
Trent-Adams is prepared for being a public figure, after serving as a guest lecturer at both Hampton University and the University of Maryland. She also has several published research papers and articles to her name.
A humble servant of those in need
During her time working in the oncology unit at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., Trent-Adams worked closely with cancer patients near the end of their lives. In interviews, she’s said the experience helped connect her to a greater purpose of serving those in need selflessly.
