5 Timeless Design 'Trends' You Will Remember from this Decade

Studio McGee said it best... "Define trend. Is a trend something goes in and out of style? Or is it something that is having a moment? Design choices can be both classic and popular..." I'd like to think (and hope) that the design choices I'm making in my home now will stand the test of time. I'm sure there'll be some "why in the hell did I do that?" moments 10 or 20 years from now, but overall? I'm down with the timeless type of 'trend'—the design moments we're loving now and hope to appreciate for years to come. Here are a handful that we're all sure to remember the "tens" by!

Black Windows

From Studio McGee... Rooted in industrial design of the early 20th century, black windows became ubiquitous when steel and aluminum were readily available options. They were marketed to bring daylight into warehouses and factories and eventually made their way into homes. As you can see in refurbished and retrofitted buildings that’ve kept their black windows, the current trend alludes to that timeless look. We might see them becoming less popular in the future, but it’s almost impossible for a home to look “dated” when it’s such a direct reference of a classic look. From the reemergence of subway tile, to unlacquered brass and refined rustic features, these trends may not be here to stay with their popularity—but they are safer bets than painted chevron walls and reclaimed plank walls.

The Statement Island

The beauty of paint is that you can paint over it! But I have a feeling that many of the painted statement islands we've been seeing will stand the test of time. Especially classic blue beauties like this one.

Brass Hardware & Finishes

We recently replaced all of the hardware and faucet in our own kitchen with a brushed (not to be confused with polished!) brass, so I'm reallllly hoping this design moment will be loved for years to come.

Patterned Tile

Much like wallpaper, patterned tile can make a statement. If done right, it can leave a truly timeless look that wows anyone who walks into a room. From floors to fireplaces and showers to backsplashes, this design element isn't going anywhere.

Shiplap

There's no denying that Chip & Jo made shiplap a thing of this decade. It's a design element that works with just about any style (or mishmash of styles)!
