$6.2 Million Will Score You This Seventh-Floor Spread at the Dakota in N.Y.C.
One of New York City’s most storied apartment houses is the Dakota, on the Upper West Side. Household names like actress Judy Garland and Lauren Bacall are just two of its myriad famous residents from years past, and, of course, John Lennon and Yoko Ono once owned a handful of units within the landmarked building at the corner of West 72nd Street and Central Park West. Indeed, Lennon was gunned down at the entrance to the building in 1980.
A two-bedroom spread on the seventh floor with 13-foot ceilings, Big Apple vistas, and an asking price of $6.2 million, was long owned according to tax records by the late lawyer Paul H. Epstein, who bought it sometime before 1999 and later lived there with his husband Garry Parton. Epstein, who died in 2022, was known for working with a clientele of entertainment industry heavy hitters that included American conductor Leonard Bernstein, who also lived at the Dakota, as well as the choreographer Twyla Tharp and the Broadway theater writing team of Rodgers & Hammerstein.

The entrance gallery features the first of five fireplaces, followed by another in the living room through large pocket doors. Northern views of the open sky captivate from within the space, alongside views of the urban cityscape. The dining room, originally a library, includes a hidden wet bar and a third fireplace, while the original, oversized dining room across the hall, where the fourth fireplace is located, has been converted to a third bedroom.
A small study sits between the dining room-turned-bedroom and the eat-in kitchen, which is outfitted with oak cabinetry and a range of stainless steel appliances, including a wine fridge for your favorite bottles. There are two bedrooms off a long corridor, including the primary bedroom, where there’s the fifth and final fireplace along with a Juliet balcony. Two renovated bathrooms, a den/home office, and a half-bath complete the plan.
