6 Organizing Ideas to Steal From This Entryway

Cami, the blogger behind Tidbits, had a "drop-zone" problem. Even though she had intended her entryway's wide closet to stow everyday bags, shoes and more, the space had become seriously unruly. With no clear structure, it turned into a catch-all dumping ground, and Cami was dying to add a bit of order (and style) to her makeshift mudroom.

Here are the tricks that worked so beautifully for her:

1. Consider ditching a closet.
Cami opened up the entryway's closet to create a larger "mudroom" space. Getting rid of a closet may seem like sacrilege to any homeowner bursting at the seams with stuff, but it can be a smart move. More open space means you can be flexible with your storage options (and the new look can offer your family a little more breathing room as they're running out the door).

2. Hang an up-high shelf.
Taking advantage of overhead space is a great way to keep items you don't use every day out of the way. Cami placed matching neutral bins on her shelves, which turn clutter into a decorative accent.

3. Repurpose a hamper.
It's helpful to have a covered bin where you can toss things without thinking twice. Cami uses hers to keep soccer balls and other yard games out of sight.

4. Choose closed cubbies.
Even organizing pros like to use open cubes for versatile storage, but Cami opted for a set of pale-yellow lockers (which she found on eBay) to hold her family's things. Backpacks, coats, and other gear aren't terribly pretty, so hiding them keeps the space serene. Plus, each person has a spot to call their own.

5. Go monochrome.
An all-white look might not be everyone's cup of tea, but Cami had the right idea by choosing just one hue. It imparts a neat-and-tidy aesthetic, even when things get a little cluttered.

6. Make room for a bench.
If you have a place to sit to put your shoes on, or a seat to prop your purse while you remove your coat, it can help you feel less frazzled both entering and leaving your house. Then, you'll be less likely to toss your bag wherever when you're crouched on the floor untying your sneakers.
