If you want your cat and dog to be besties.
If you're adding a dog to your home, you should consult with the rescue you're adopting him from to see if he gets along well with cats. A lot of the time a dog or cat entering into a household with a previous pet will grow to tolerate each other, if not become pals. You should introduce them slowly, and make sure your cat has a safe place to retreat to. It also helps if you adopt both animals at a young age.
About two years ago we fostered an abandoned kitten a friend of our family found and bottle fed it every few hours, assuming once it was old enough we'd find it a new forever home. When the kitten was big enough to explore our house our Pomeranian sadly got a hold of it.
That put an end to the idea of re-homing it immediately. From that point on, she has been our dog's cat. They eat together, sleep together, play together and spend hours licking each other. Now if only he could pay her veterinary bills.
