6 Women Wore Juicy Couture Tracksuits to Work and Everything Got Better
A lot has been written recently about the return of the Juicy Couture tracksuit. All over the internet, people are claiming that the early 2000s celebrity wardrobe staple is primed for an epic comeback. Cosmopolitan.com decided to test this theory out by having seven editors wrap themselves in Juicy Couture velour for the day and report back on their experiences. Here's what happened:
1. Danielle, 23
"I lived in my Juicy tracksuit back in the day. I shared a closet with my sister when we were growing up, so together, we had one for every day of the week, and we would borrow and mix and match all the time. It's been six years since I last wore one though. It felt so good to be reunited. It felt like coming home.
"I posted a pic on Instagram of me wearing the tracksuit, and everyone in the comments was like, 'Is this back? OMG! Love! Obsessed!' Everyone was excited! Then I got probably 10 texts from people wanting to know if they're back in style and where to buy them because they loved their old Juicy tracksuits so much. It's funny because I think everyone is afraid to love them openly. Everyone's like, 'Haha, yeah, that's funny, but I don't actually want to wear one' - but they're lying! They know in their hearts that nothing would make them happier. #TrackIsBack and it's magic!"
2. Carina, 22
"I had a few Juicy sweatshirts in the mid-aughts, but never a full-on matching tracksuit. They were definitely a status symbol back then and my parents were not about to let me run around in a $200 tracksuit.
"I spent the whole day feeling like I should have been carrying a teacup chihuahua and a Frappuccino."
3. Mylan, 27
"I never wore a Juicy tracksuit in high school. My mom always stressed the importance of looking 'put-together' so that was definitely not a thing she would have ever allowed.
"That said, OMG! It was literally the most comfortable thing I've ever put on. It was so soft!
"The only downside was that everyone was staring at me all day. Maybe it was because I looked liked the Pink Panther. If they do make a comeback, would they be considered office-appropriate? If so, I think I might invest in a black one."
4. Caitlin, 25
"Before this, I had never worn a Juicy tracksuit. I felt really dressed down at work. It actually made me appreciate getting ready for work in the morning and how much more confident I feel when I'm more dressed up.
"I was also hyper-conscious of people staring at me. I don't actually think anyone was judging me that hard, but for some reason, when I went out for lunch, I had this nagging feeling that strangers were talking about me behind my back like, 'Will you look at that - 2002 is back.'
"I think I was probably making a bigger deal out of it than it needed to be. It's just a fucking tracksuit. I hope it does come back. Especially if it means more iconic pop culture moments like Amy Poehler in Mean Girls."
5. Maya, 22
"My sister and I were obsessed with these in middle school. I mean, who wasn't? I remember begging my mom to take me to Nordstrom Rack one weekend to get a navy blue tracksuit with 'JUICY' in gold sparkly letters across the butt. I thought I was too cute wearing it the next day at school. My friends and I were convinced that our Juicy tracksuits brought all the boys to the yard.
"Velour tracksuits aren't really my style anymore, but the material is still super comfortable, and it turned out to be a great conversation starter. Everyone I talked to just wanted to reminisce about the days when they wore them and how fun it was."
6. Alie, 30
"In high school in the early 2000s, I basically wore one of two outfits: jeans with a tank top under a half-zipped Juicy zip-up, or Juicy sweats with a T-shirt. (You never wore the pieces together!) Discount stores like Loehmann's made it easy to have a lot of pieces in a lot of colors, though my black velour pants were my favorite. I wore them so much that they were gray by the end of college and I had to buy a replacement pair, which I still wear. They are my house pants of choice, even over leggings. I love them. I have owned many pairs of sweatpants over the years, and they are by far the most comfortable ones ever.
"That said, when I put on the full tracksuit for this experiment and looked at myself in the mirror, I could see why my dad hated my high-school look. I looked like I was going out in my pajamas, and so un-put-together.
"Don't get me wrong, I still love my own Juicy sweatpants. The only way you'll get me to give those up is if you pry them from my cold, dead hands."
