We found the fleece front soft to the touch, and its thick design was extremely comfortable to sit on, masking the feeling of rocks underneath. The reverse side is made of a waterproof material that staved off dampness in our testing, and despite the blanket’s substantial size—80 x 70 inches—it’s lightweight and easy to transport.
While it may take some practice to refold this blanket correctly, it is secured by a bungee wrap and has a carrying strap. This blanket is similar to a quilted bed comforter, thanks to its polyester-rayon front and a thick layer of polyester insulation. Liquids puddled up on its surface during our testing, allowing us to wipe spills away with no stain left behind. We also easily brushed sand away, making us think this blanket would be especially great for a beach picnic. It’s even designed to repel dirt, burrs, and pet hair, but we did not get a chance to test it with these specific materials.
We also loved that it has six utility loops around the edges that allow you to stake it down in windy conditions, but it does not come with ground stakes. How We Tested the Picnic Blankets
After buying 30 highly-rated picnic blankets, we constructed a sand beach at The Lab in Des Moines, Iowa, and subjected each picnic blanket to a number of tests. We initially evaluated the quality of each blanket by laying them on the sand and examining it for loose threads, tears, or other design quirks. We also folded up each blanket and noted how easy it was to follow the manufacturer's instructions and portability claims. If the blanket included a carrying case, we made sure to consider how easy it was to put it back into the case.
To assess comfort, we put rocks on the sand and then spread the picnic blankets over them. We then took turns sitting on each blanket to see if we could detect the rock underneath, and note whether any designs stood out for extra cushioning. In our first ease of cleaning test, we sprinkled sand on each blanket, then tried to shake it off to see whether the sand came off or stuck to the material.
