7 Short Hair Color Ideas, According to a Celebrity Stylist

Less hair doesn't mean less options.

If you want a hairstyle that will make a memorable statement, a short, colored cut is the way to go. But don't just take my word for it. Think back to Pink’s early 2000s fuchsia pixie, Miley Cyrus’ blonde mullet, or Demi Lovato’s recent pink cropped cut. All so good.

“Unique hair looks are becoming more socially acceptable, people are experimenting with pastels, shades of pinks, peaches, blues, and seafoam greens, to infuse feminine color into their daily styles,” says Aura Friedman, a master colorist at Sally Hershberger Nomad, who has worked with several celebrities including Zo? Kravitz, Jennifer Lawrence, and Sky Ferreira. “When you have short hair it’s the best time to experiment with color.”

So if you’re in the mood for a switch, there's no better time than the present to try that bright color you've always been eyeing. And the best part is there are no rules when it comes to choosing your new shade.

“All trends work: metallic platinum, bright copper, 24 carat-gold! Every bold color in the rainbow,” says Friedman. “It’s all about suitability and adapting the color to work with your skin tone, brow shade, and eye color.”

Friedman shares some of her favorite short hair color creations, below.

Platinum Pixie

“If you’re opting for a short platinum cut, it’s fun to play with tones,” says Friedman. “For this look, I went with a pearly white tone.”

Pastel Pinks

For this look, Friedman kept variation in tone and dimension with a contrast of dark and light shades of pink. “The dimensional pink works beautifully with her skin tone,” the stylist says.

“Pink represents friendship, affection, harmony, inner peace, and approachability. I mixed pink tones to give the pixie dimension and a slight shadow,” Friedman shares. “This color works well with olive skin tones.”

Ravishing Reds

Bring some extra warmth to a cold winter day with a rich hair color. “Antique rose warms up the palest skin tone and works well with a square bob,” says Friedman.

Match hair to the season with rustic shades by incorporating green gold, rust color and brunette shades into your mane. For this look Friedman added depth to the color. “With redheads, it’s important to keep the color slightly dimensional, especially if you have a fair skin tone.”

Feeling Blues

Why play it safe with a neutral color when you can choose any color in the rainbow? If you’re looking for something striking, try this rich aqua shade. “A little bolder than pastel, aqua is great on slightly golden skin tones,” says Friedman.

Mellow Yellow

“Baby yellow was ideal and so unique for this beauty’s freckled complexion,” shares Friedman. “It’s a fun youthful color.”
