7 Things Everyone Should Know About Their Grandparents
Whether they’re still alive or not, you see them every week or only once a year, our grandparents are a big part of our lives. They are how we got here, after all. It can be easy to take them for granted, though, and forget that they had entire lives before we came along, so it’s important to make the most of our time with them. They’ll always want to hear about your life and what you’re doing, but don’t miss out on asking them about their lives. As someone who lost the last of my grandparents when I was just 19, I know what it’s like to regret not being able to have more of those special conversations with them. Now, I cherish stories from my parents and aunts and uncles about my grandparents when they come up, and try to file away the best stories in my memory.
Below is a list of 7 things everyone should know about their grandparents. If you’re lucky enough to still have your grandparents around and haven’t had enough of these conversations, these topics are a great way to get them talking. And if you’ve sadly already lost your grandparents, it’s not too late—ask your parents’ generation to see what they remember.
1. How they met their spouse
This is sure to be a great story that brings up wonderful memories, even if their spouse is no longer alive. Dating during our grandparents’ generation was a whole different world anyway, so hearing about those details will definitely be entertaining and give you a new perspective.
2 . What the house they grew up in was like
Some families are lucky enough to keep special houses in the family, but for others, younger generations move away and properties are left behind. If they remember the address, it would be a special, fun trip to take to return to your grandparent’s childhood home with them.
3. If there’s anything left on their bucket list they’d like to accomplish
As someone who went swimming with dolphins alongside my 90-year-old grandmother, I know firsthand it’s never too late to have once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

4. What they thought of their daughter- or son-in-law when they first met them
Whether your parents are still together or not, it’s interesting to hear what your grandparents thought the first time they met the man or woman who married their daughter or son. Maybe they knew it was meant to be before your parents did! If your grandparents aren’t around anymore, your parent’s siblings probably remember what mom and dad thought at the time!
5. What they’re most proud of
When you really only know your grandparents during their golden years, it can be hard to imagine them working full-time, raising a family, or being involved in the community. Most grandparents will most probably say their family, but we bet there were some big personal accomplishments along the way it’d feel good to remember.
6. Who their favorite relative was growing up
Maybe they had a special relationship with a grandparent or aunt you’ve never heard of. Asking about this can fill out your family tree with names and personalities.
7. What’s the best advice they ever received
Someone can answer this at any age, but the advice or encouragement you remember until the end of your life is bound to be significant and meaningful.
