7 Things You Need To Know About Tara Lipinski

Let's be real: Olympics fun doesn't truly start until you see Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir in action as figure skating commentators.

Tara, 30, and her BFF banter with fellow former skater Johnny (and their amazing fashion) make them a must-watch — even if you’re not into triple axels. But before tuning in, there are a few things you should know about Tara.

Ice skating wasn’t her first sport

Tara discovered her love for the rink when she started roller skating at age 3. At 9, she won the girls freestyle title at the United States Roller Skating Championships, according to her website.

Her fame goes back a long time

Two decades ago, she made history. At age 14, Tara became the youngest person ever to win a World Figure Skating Championship, and she became the youngest winner of an individual medal at the 1998 Nagano Olympic games. (She was 15 years and 255 days, notes USA Today.)

She doesn’t actually have her gold medal

As she told People, “it goes to museums or exhibits and then if I ever wanted it back I can, and it has security to make sure nothing happens to it.”

She’s a newlywed

Tara married sports producer Todd Kapostasy in July 2017 in Charleston, South Carolina. Her dress? A Reem Acra gown with a 20-foot tulle skirt, reports People. Even better: The pre-ceremony celebration was held at the same place as Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds wed. Of course, Johnny was her "bridesman."

She gets around

Tara’s Instagram is filled with gorgeous pics of her world travels, including her honeymoon to Thailand, Vietnam, Switzerland, Italy, and Greece last year. “I will never forget this beautiful time of traveling the world and experiencing all these incredible moments with @toddkap. I've travelled for most of my life but getting to do it with a husband I'm madly in love with makes it that much better,” she posted.

She’s judgy (in a good way)

In addition to her role as a commentator for skating events, Tara joined Molly Sims and Jordan Sparks on the Miss America judges panel in 2017. “We’ve been studying and preparing and watching videos and getting to know these girls and they’re all so special…That’s why it’s so terrifying. It’s going to be a tough job,” she told CelebSecretsTV.

She's only ever competed in one Olympics games

While Tara is strongly associated with Olympic figure skating, she's actually only ever competed at one Olympics event: the 1998 Nagano games. Once she turned 15, she went pro and toured with Champions on Ice for several years, according to her personal website.
