$80 round trip flights out of Wilmington: Here are the cheapest flights this summer
Now that summer is in full swing, it may be time for an impromptu vacation.
While there have been route changes afoot out of the Wilmington Airport, Avelo Airlines is still offering round-trip service to six southern destinations all summer long.
Delaware Online/The News Journal checked out some of the cheapest routes to take advantage of to each spot, plus some tips on how to book your next trip.
Where can I travel from the Wilmington Airport?
Avelo Airlines currently services seven routes out of the Wilmington Airport, most of which are available twice weekly.
After permanently and seasonally suspending certain flight routes, Avelo Airlines, Wilmington Airport’s sole commercial airline, has confirmed the return of select flight destinations, as well as some route changes to familiar routes, which will last until Nov. 5.
The current route destinations available out of ILG are:
Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Fort Myers, Florida
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Orlando Beach, Florida
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Tampa, Florida
Wilmington, North Carolina
Flights to Sarasota and West Palm Beach, Florida, originally scrapped from ILG’s lineup, are expected to return in mid-November.
What are the cheapest summer flights?
All prices listed below are as of Tuesday, June 11, and are subject to change depending on when the flights are booked. The prices below also do not reflect checked bags, carry-ons or other fees that may be applicable.
Fort Lauderdale, Florida (FLL)
Flights to Fort Lauderdale will fly twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays through Aug. 18.
Departure flights are typically cheaper on Sundays, and return flights are usually cheaper on Thursdays.
A single ticket for departure flights to Fort Lauderdale starts as low as $61 in mid-July and Sundays in August. Return flights on Thursdays from July 4 through Aug. 15 are also starting at $61.
BEST BET: Overall, if you plan a Sunday-to-Thursday trip to Fort Lauderdale in mid-July, the round-trip fare could start as low as $121.
Fort Myers, Florida (RSW)
Flights to Fort Myers fly out of Wilmington on Mondays and Fridays through Nov. 4
A one-way ticket to Fort Myers, Florida, is as low as $61 on certain days in July, and every Friday and Monday in August until Aug. 19. The lowest price return flights range from $61-$67 on certain dates in mid-July and every Friday and Monday in August.
BEST BET: It seems like a quick Friday-to-Monday trip in August will be the best bang for your buck, with a round-trip price of around $121 per person for certain weeks.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (MYR)
Myrtle Beach flights fly twice a week on Mondays and Fridays until Aug. 30.
Flights to Myrtle Beach are going for as low as $41 or $46 on Mondays and Fridays in July and August. Return flights in July range slightly between $46 and $66, but Monday and Friday return dates in August are also as low as $41 and $46.
Beginning Sept. 2, flights will increase to three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through Nov. 4
BEST BET: Another Friday-to-Monday trip in August could go for as low as $82 round-trip fare per person.
Orlando Beach, Florida (MCO)
Flights to Orlando fly four times per week on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays through Nov. 4.
Flights to Orlando are some of the more expensive routes that are flying out of ILG, but there is more versatility when you can fly down and back.
As of June 11, the cheapest summer flight to get to Orlando is $76 on select days in July and August. There are a few $76 return flights in July and August, but most range from $83-$108.
BEST BET: If a cheap trip is what you’re looking for, this route may not be for you. But if you’re looking to visit Orlando, a Friday-to-Monday trip in mid-July could go for as low as $152 round-trip, per person.
San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU)
Flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico, the only destination outside of the continental U.S., flies out twice per week on Wednesdays and Saturdays through Nov. 2.
San Juan is another more expensive route option offered out of ILG, but there is no shortage of sightseeing and activities to keep you occupied while you’re there.
There are a few $101 departure and returning one-way flights in late July and throughout August. Other availabilities range from $120 to over $200 tickets per one-way ticket.
BEST BET: Depending on how long you want your stay to be, a Saturday-Wednesday or a Wednesday-Saturday trip in late August can be as low as $202 for a single round-trip ticket fare.
Tampa, Florida (TPA)
Flights to Tampa fly out twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays through Sept. 26.
The cheapest departure and return flights in and out of the Tampa airport are in August, when one-way prices are as low as $61. Flights in July aren’t much more expensive, most ranging from $67-$74 for departure and return flights, respectively.
Beginning Sept. 29, frequency will increase to three times per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays through Nov. 5.
BEST BET: Take a long weekend with a Thursday-to-Sunday trip in early to mid-August for just $122 for one round-trip ticket.
Wilmington, North Carolina (ILM)
Flights occur twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays through Sept. 2
Flights to Wilmington, North Carolina, are some of the cheapest currently available out of the Wilmington Airport. Flights in June, July and August all go for as low as $41 or $46 for both departure and returning flights, as of June 11. Return flights in August have less of a range in terms of its prices, only going as high as $52.
Beginning Sept. 5., the days of flights will change to Thursdays and Sundays for the remainder of the month. On Oct. 1, frequency will increase to three times per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays through Nov. 5
BEST BET: Take another long weekend in August with a Friday-to-Monday trip for as low as $82.

How to purchase an Avelo ticket
Bookings with Avelo Airlines out of ILG can be made online.
Avelo Airlines allows customers to change or cancel flights up to 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Canceled reservations rack up a charge of $20 per seat. All canceled reservations are eligible for Avelo Travel Funds that can be used on future flights with Avelo.
If a trip is canceled within 24 hours of purchase and at least seven days before the scheduled departure, the trip will be completely refunded to the form of payment originally used. These transactions can be made online.

Beginning Oct. 7, American Airlines will launch a coach bus service out of the Wilmington Airport transporting them to the Philadelphia Airport.
