9/11 Facts To Remember Flight 93, Pentagon and World Trade Center Attacks

For some, the 9/11 attacks and the trauma associated with them still feels fresh. While America has pushed forward since the Sept. 11 terror attacks, the country and world were never the same in their aftermath. America entered two wars, with the War on Terror in Afghanistan only just ending in 2021, nearly a decade later. The Department of Homeland Security and National Security Agency were also created. And, obviously closest to home, many lost loved ones along with a sense of security that most Americans took for granted before 9/11.
For all that America lost on Sept. 11, 2001—in the smallest of silver linings—the country also gained other things: The sense of unity and patriotism that followed the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks, as well as the United Flight 93 crash, were unlike anything the United States had seen since World War II.

How many people died on 9/11?
A total of 2,996 were killed on 9/11 and more than 6,000 were injured, according to The Washington Post. The total dead include the hijackers; the plane passengers, pilots and crew; 2,606 people in the World Trade Center and nearby areas, and 125 people at the Pentagon.
The 9/11 attacks killed 2,751 victims initially. In 2007, the total death toll was increased to account for those who succumbed to illnesses caused by exposure to the dust, debris and toxins (including asbestos, lead and mercury) from the terror attacks, and tragically, that number continues to rise. As of 2019, the new World Trade Center deaths totaled 2,753 and the overall deaths from all afflicted areas is 2,996.

What time did 9/11 happen?
The 9/11 attacks occurred in the morning hours of Sept. 11, 2001. Departing from Boston's Logan International Airport, American Airlines Flight 11 was flown into the World Trade Center's North Tower at 8:46 a.m. ET. United Airlines Flight 175, also departing from Logan, hit the South Tower 17 minutes later at 9:03 a.m. ET.
American Airlines Flight 77 departed from Dulles International Airport in Virginia when it was hijacked over Ohio and crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. ET. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, departed from Newark International Airport (now called Newark Liberty). It was hijacked at approximately 9:28 a.m. ET and crashed into a field over Shanksville, Pa., at approximately 10:03 a.m. ET.

Only 15 people escaped from the North Tower of the World Trade Center attack before the building collapsed. The South Tower had 18 survivors, all from the floors beneath the impact zone of the plane. Following the buildings' collapse, only 23 people, including first responders, made it out of the debris.
At the Pentagon, an average of 23,000 individuals are in the building at any given time—meaning it had a statistically much higher rate of survival than the WTC did upon impact.
