Not everything is supersized today — especially if your’e a woman with feet that may only measure a size 4 or 5. While there’s lots to choose from today in apparel designed for women who stand 5 foot 3 inches and under, there’s less choice when it comes to footwear for those with small feet.

Thankfully, there are a growing number of brands that are catering their offerings to small-footed folk — including everything from sneakers to evening sandals and smoking slippers. Plus, they’re all available in a wide range of prices to suit every budget.

Most brands specializing in small offerings begin their footwear with a size 4 — smaller than that and you might want to consider the children’s shoe department. Consider brands such as Naturalizer and Walking Cradles, known for their wide range of sizes and widths. For those who wear a size 5, the choices become greater and include styles from Kenneth Cole and J. Renee.

The best place to start your search is online since most brick-and-mortar retailers do not have the physical space to stock a wide range of sizes, especially if worn by a minority of the population.

Top Brands for Small Feet

  • Kenneth Cole: The brand’s offerings start at size 5.

Small Sizes Through the Years

In the ’30s and ’40s, footwear manufacturers typically made samples in a size 4. And there were women with feet small enough to model them. Today, however, as people have increased in size, so have their feet, prompting today’s shoe companies to increase their sample size to a 7.

According to an article on ScientificAmerican.com by Michael J.
