9 Summer Color Trends to Inspire You This Season
With warmer weather finally here, we’re focusing on the summer color trends that are defining the design industry this season. Inspired by the Chairish Market Preview, which covered the products that were set to launch this spring at design industry events, these color combinations run the gamut from bright shades to jewel tones and even a few sophisticated neutrals. See nine of our favorite color trends below and get ready to amp up your own spaces.
1) Pink & Red
This is definitely one of the biggest trends we’ve been seeing, and no, it has nothing to do with cherubs, hearts, or Valentine’s Day. Pink and red create a riotous, revelatory mix, as in this bedroom by Summer Thornton. These colorful elements are combined with more neutral furnishings like the love seat and desk to provide balance to the space without being overwhelming.
2) Summer Gold
Summer Gold is all about brightening up beige with a color that adds personality to neutral shades without being attention-grabbing. "In the practice of feng shui, gold represents heaven, sunshine, and warmth: the perfect color choice for my clients’ warm Florida bedroom in the sky,” says Phyllis Taylor of Taylor & Taylor.
3) Lush Botanical Greens
This season, we’re seeing bright botanicals appearing with traditional greens. Pair these colors with jewel toned greens and natural materials like rattan and wicker, as in this elegant sitting room by Eclectic Home.
4) Mediterranean Hues
Beach-inspired without being overly nautical, a Mediterranean color scheme includes taupes, blues, and beiges, along with coastal elements like rope and rattan. This beachfront living room by Lauren Nelson Design incorporates all of the above, with a peaceful color scheme highlighted by a beautifully tiled fireplace with rope art hanging overhead.
5) Grape Juice
It may be summer, but shades of red wine are all the rage. Rich, vibrant purples and deep reds are swirling around (we’re calling them “grape juice”). As designer Patrick Dragonette said of his client’s grape juice-hued bedroom, “it takes a confident guy to have a royal purple room!” The color is bold but soothing and adds richness to any space it inhabits.
6) Painterly Blue & White
Put some prep in your step with a blue and white striped color scheme. The delicate interplay between these colors has long been a design favorite, and we’re seeing it more in bold stripes (as demonstrated in the bedroom above by Janet Patterson Interior Design) as well as delicate, painted strokes.
7) Light Ikat
We’ve been seeing more ikat every season, with executions ranging from throw pillows and accessories to sofas upholstered in a bold ikat. This time around, we’re seeing more subtle applications of ikat, in muted, elegant tones than in years past, as in this lovely bedroom by Fathom Design Company.
8) Pink & Orange
Often found in delicate floral applications, pink and orange is a color combination that can also work boldly with other hues, as in this vibrant Brooklyn living room by Ana Luchangco, currently the founder of InSpace NY Design. The vivid wallpaper is called Taurus, by designer Sarah Morris for Maharam, while the wool and velvet sofa is by B&B Italia.
9) Busy Stone
Who says stone has to be silent? Busy, noisy stone patterns are seeing a comeback, whether it's marble, granite, onyx, or any number of other materials. Designer Summer Thornton used this eye-catching center table to make a statement next to a softly hued, inviting chaise.
