A Chanel Bag Is a Better Investment Than a House
A timeless Chanel bag is most certainly a fashion investment, and according to a new study, a viable financial investment too.
Researchers have revealed that buying an iconic Chanel 2.55 (the flap bag) could even be a safer bet than buying a house.
Vintage handbag authority Baghunter conducted a study where experts analyzed the pricing history and investment potential of the 2.55, a pattern which is largely indicative of Chanel handbags as a whole. What they found was that between 2010 and 2015, the retail value of the 2.55 outpaced the rise of inflation in the United States (by more than eight times!).
“Housing prices increased by 8.1 percent and the S&P 500 by 13.2 percent during that same period, with neither coming close to matching the rapid value increase of the Chanel Medium Classic Flap bag,” reads the study.
The research found that in the last six years, the value of Chanel bags has gone up by 70 percent.
When the classic bag was first launched in February 1955 it was priced at $220, but by the ’90s it had rocketed to $1,150.
And today? $4,900.
Yep, the Medium Classic Flap has increased in value by over 70 percent in the last six years alone.
Evelyn Fox, CEO of Baghunter, told Marie Claire: “We decided to conduct a study into Chanel handbags as we wanted to see if we could gain an insight into how Chanel implements their pricing tactics.
“And we were very surprised to see the extraordinary increase in value of certain bags over the last six years in particular.”
