Is your AC ready for the summer heat? Heed this expert advice
DENVER (KDVR) — High temperatures in the 90s are expected this week and will place many air conditioning systems under added stress.
FOX31 asked HVAC professionals how to ensure your cooling system stays in shape through the summer season. They advise having your system inspected before heavy use this summer.
How many days will Denver hit 100 degrees this year?
When to change air filters
Changing soiled air filters can prevent many expensive problems from developing. Some manufacturers recommend replacing the filters every 30 days during heavy use.
Make sure your AC is clean
Jason Gerlach of Plumbline Services told FOX31 that a simple cleaning can identify problems that could lead to expensive replacement of key components of a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.
“The blower wheel that moves the air around, that can become dirty and need to be cleaned and replaced, which causes your evaporator coil in part of your air conditioner (to) get clogged up with dust and debris,” Gerlach said.
Signs of problems with an AC system
A malfunctioning thermostat, loud noises inside an indoor or outside unit or lack of cool air is a good sign there is a problem.
“They can indicate either low refrigerant, lack of airflow on the system or the outdoor unit has been shut down due to any kind of safeties that were installed,” Gerlach said.
Make sure AC inspector is licensed
A simple system inspection can run between $50-$200, depending on the home. Neglecting the system can instead cause thousands of dollars in damages.

Electrical connections and safety valves are also tested for safety and functionality.
Many HVAC manufacturers will not stand behind their warranty if the unit is not inspected by a licensed contractor, so always check the company’s registration.
