This year has been full of unexpected, heartbreaking, and downright bizarre political stories. Combine that with people thinking they can’t say “Merry Christmas” (or that there is a war on Christmas) and you get a very strange commercial. On Wednesday, December 20th, a pro-Trump political action committee released an ad. It features a bunch of people thanking the president for various reasons.

They thank Trump for “cutting my taxes,” “fixing our economy,” “keeping my family safe,” “supporting Israel,” “reminding us to stand for our national anthem,” and other things. Then, at the very end, a young girl thanks Trump for “letting us say ‘Merry Christmas’ again.” The ad definitely has a very strange vibe.

For some reason, Trump and this PAC keep implying that President Obama didn’t wish people a Merry Christmas. Which is completely untrue. Obama used the phrase “Merry Christmas,” plus other holiday greetings, every year he was in office. Despite the fact that the phrase never went away, Trump continues to insist that he’s bringing it back. But here’s the thing: You’ve never not been able to say “Merry Christmas.” Furthermore, saying “happy holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” has nothing to do with taking away a person’s right to do anything.

The real issue is that some people don’t want to acknowledge that not everyone celebrates Christmas.

Racism and intolerance have driven claims that a war on Christmas even exists in the first place.

Here’s the bizarre ad.

Our president acknowledging the holidays isn’t commendable or newsworthy. It’s normal.
