Adele threw herself a 'Titanic'-themed birthday party — but some fans complain that it's insensitive
There’s one guaranteed way to make sure you feel like the queen of the world at your 30th birthday party: throw yourself a Titanic-themed bash.
Adele, who has famously named her award-winning albums after her ages at the time, rang in the big 3-0 with a star-studded celebration inspired by her favorite film, 1997’s Titanic.

The British singer channeled Kate Winslet’s character Rose for the occasion, sporting ringlet curls and a vintage gown. Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson stayed true to the theme by donning a life jacket — which, according to U.K. TV personality Alan Carr, was provided to each guest in lieu of a goodie bag — over her retro dress. Fellow guest Mark Ronson played the part of a frostbitten victim with his ghostly pallor and ice-flecked hair and lashes.

Self-professed Titanic “superfan” Adele told her Instagram followers that it was the “best night of my life,” but fans are divided. Countless comments praised her costume and the party’s creative theme and shared their intent to plan similar soirees.

But some struggled to separate an admiration for the big-screen blockbuster from a solemn respect for the deadly 1912 disaster that inspired it. Many comments found the references to the fatal sinking — which claimed the lives of more than 1,500 passengers — to be in poor taste.
A party based on a disaster that killed 1500 people. OK.

I'm a fan of the movie. But partying in life jackets??? Makes me feel uncomfortable

Is making light of a real-life tragedy in poor taste, or should fans focus on the superstar’s love for (the fictional) Jack and Rose? Opinions vary — which likely means that this controversy will go on and on.
