A New Mexico grandpa was so excited to take part in a stranger’s sweet marriage proposal that he forgot one key element: the couple themselves!

John Hart met the couple from California while riding the Sandia Peak Tramway near Albuquerque, New Mexico, that he didn’t realize the focus of phone camera was on himself.

Hart, along with his own grandson Jaime Hart and Jaime’s pal Jayce Flauding, were riding through the locale when they met the pair. “He introduced me to his girlfriend and at that point, I said, ‘Wow hey, this would be a great chance for you to propose to your girlfriend and put a big smile on her face,’” Hart told KOB4. “And unbeknownst to me, that was the plan.”

When the tram had reached the scenic summit, Jayce, who was tasked with recording the entire proposal for the couple, handed his phone to John so that he might also capture the moment. (John is a former Navy photographer). But in the frenzy of the moment, John forgot to flip the camera’s lens to face forward, instead capturing his own reaction to the proposal.

“Oh, that’s so cool,” he can be heard saying as people nearby applaud the newly engaged couple. “I didn’t know it was going to happen but I sure said something.”

At one point in the viral video, John realizes his mistake and those around him can be heard laughing at the fun mistake (thankfully, Jayce captured the full proposal, so the moment wasn’t lost!).

“I thought I could handle this. Well, unbeknownst to me, I’m taping myself,” Hart said.
