Airbnb Is Looking for 5 People to Live in the Bahamas This Spring
Airbnb is putting your New Year’s resolution to "help others more" to the test with a new Airbnb Sabbatical program.
Airbnb is teaming up with the Bahamas National Trust to give five lucky people the chance to live in the Bahamas. You can become an islander as you help locals’ efforts to bring visitors back to the country after the incredible destruction caused by Hurricane Dorian.
With its more than 700 islands and 2,400 cays, the country suffered a great deal as a result of the natural disaster last year. It left many homes, businesses and hospitals destroyed, and led to a decline in both population and number of tourists.
The Airbnb participants will work alongside locals to preserve natural resources and help bring visitors back to the island nation.
From April 1 to May 31, the five participants will travel to three islands in the country: Andros, Exumas and Eleuthera (which weren't impacted by the storm). They will learn about the local cultures and work on projects around the islands.
In Andros, guests will work with underwater and travel photographer Katie Storr to create a coral reef restoration program. The island, hosting the third largest reef system in the world, will be home to a new nursery to care for coral reef that's been affected across the island in North Marine Park.
In Exuma, they'll work closely with freediver Andre Musgrove to replicate The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park ecosystem in waters around the island. This includes participating in conch conservation, traditional boatbuilding and sailing.
And the island with the prettiest pink sand beaches, Eleuthera, will have participants collaborate with master gardener Omar Mclewhite and learn about the native trees, how to establish a bush tea farm, research native species and more.
Over the two months, each participant will work with community leaders and develop programs with sustainability and economic benefits.
You can apply now until February 18 for your chance to be the lucky five at airbnb.com/sabbatical. The final selections will be announced on March 25.
A chance to stay in a beautiful country and make a big difference? That's a win-win situation in our book.
