Al Roker Reveals Recovery From Recent Surgery Is 'More Complicated' in Heath Update

Al Roker is updating fans on his post-knee surgery recovery.

The famed weatherman made a special virtual appearance on the Today show on Monday, May 15, to provide his co-stars Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, Craig Melvin and Dylan Dreyer with a health update.

"It's Monday, I'm home from the hospital," Roker, who is taking a brief absence from the morning show, said, adding, "Just another day!"

The 68-year-old explained that he was feeling “stiff,” noting that this recovery is a “little more complicated.”

He explained that doctors call the procedure a “revision,” as “it was a replacement of a replacement, so they had to take stuff out, put stuff in, so it was a bit of a bear.”

Since the journey back to health is a little more complex, Roker has been taking it easy.

"So we've just been kind of hanging out. Chilling out, not doing anything — which I know, a lot of people find hard to believe, but in fact, that is the case,” he explained, adding that he’s been catching up on TV shows like Mrs. Davis, The Mandalorian, and Poker Face.

There’s also been plenty of family time with his son, Nick, who returned from college, and wife, Deborah Roberts, who has been his rock throughout all of the health emergencies of the past few years.

"I was being wildly optimistic that we were going to go to one of our [favorite restaurants], Daniel, for Mother's Day, which is kind of our tradition,” he explained, revealing it was “not realistic.”

Instead, the family “ordered in some quiche and some stuff and just had a nice meal in the backyard here, which was nice, because it was a gorgeous day yesterday."

While he doesn’t have a return date set, he’s hoping to be back on morning airwaves “sometime in the next two weeks.”

"I'll just play it by ear every day,” he said, adding that he’ll have to prioritize “three days a week of physical rehab that'll go on for a few months."

Roker underwent knee replacement surgery for the first time in April 2022. His second surgery was delayed due to health issues as he was hospitalized with blood clots in his legs and lung, which doctors believe occurred after COVID.

His medical team later found two bleeding ulcers, but once he went into surgery, they had to remove his gallbladder, resect his colon, and redo a part of his small intestine.

At the time, Roker joked, "I went into for one operation, I got four free."

We can’t wait to see Roker back on our TV screens, but we hope he prioritizes his healing first and foremost.
